brief

This soulful group of empowered women manage to make time to share joy through music outside of their already very busy schedules. Their non-profit organization is dedicated to sharing their knowledge of Afro-Brazilian culture and making people move with their samba-reggae grooves. Between balancing life and a busy drumming schedule, updating their ten year old website was not a high priority. That’s where I came in.

constraints

The existing site was built in WordPress with a theme that is no longer supported. This meant starting from scratch. The band is a non-profit organization meaning we were limited to using free themes and plugins within their existing hosting plan. The band is run during spare time, and those involved also have full-time jobs and families to tend to. This was important to consider both during the duration of our project, and in planning for future ongoing site maintenance and workflows.

solution

We considered several options for incorporating a private, internal-facing component to the new site which would serve as an access point for members to tools and resources. Ultimately we decided to keep the website as an external-facing marketing piece, and used Google for Nonprofits to fulfill our user portal/resource center needs. These solutions provided both long-term cost benefits as well as more accessible ways to manage and create resource material.

We wanted one cohesive website encompassing all the different types of art Alexandra provides. Our goal was to showcase better her projects, make it easier to shop, and separately showcase her tattoo work along with an online booking system.

constraints

This project was an opportunity for me to learn to use a new tool: Wix. Positive for my experience, but constraining in that there is a learning curve. The challenge was to use this new tool to produce both a visually stunning website, as well as provide the client with an easy to maintain CMS in the backend.

In order to implement certain visual design elements and to break up the site sections we decided to implement a few bespoke components.
